Things I Pretend Don’t Stress Me Out (But Totally Do)
Share
Let’s be honest for a second.
There are things I act like I’m totally fine with…
Like I’ve reached some higher level of calm where nothing bothers me.
I’ll say things like,
“It’s okay, I’ll get to it later.”
Or,
“It’s not a big deal.”
Meanwhile… my brain is quietly spiraling in the background.
So today, I’m exposing myself a little.
Here are the things I pretend don’t stress me out—but absolutely do.
1. My Phone Notifications
I like to think I’m “not glued to my phone.”
But the second I see:
- 14 unread texts
- 27 emails
- A random app notification I didn’t even know I had
My brain immediately goes:
“Okay cool, we’re overwhelmed now.”
And the worst part?
Half of it isn’t even important.
It’s just… there. Waiting. Lingering. Existing.
2. The “I’ll Do It Later” List
You know the list.
The one that lives in your head (or in your notes app) where everything gets pushed to “later.”
- Fold the laundry
- Respond to that message
- Organize literally anything
- Drink more water (somehow always on the list)
Individually, none of it feels stressful.
But together?
It turns into this quiet pressure that never fully goes away.
3. A Messy Space I’m Ignoring
I can sit on the couch and tell myself I’m relaxing…
But if there’s:
- clutter on the table
- dishes in the sink
- random piles of things that don’t belong anywhere
There’s a part of my brain that refuses to fully settle.
It’s like trying to relax while someone is gently tapping you on the shoulder the entire time.
4. Feeling “Behind” (Even When I’m Not)
This one is subtle.
Nothing is technically wrong.
I’m doing what I need to do.
But there’s still this feeling like:
“I should be doing more.”
“I should be further along.”
“I should have figured this out already.”
No real deadline. No real reason.
Just… pressure I made up myself.
5. Trying to Relax “Properly”
This might be the most ironic one.
Sometimes I’ll think:
“Okay, I need to relax.”
And suddenly it becomes a whole thing.
- Light the candle
- Put on calming music
- Do it right
- Feel calm immediately
And if it doesn’t work?
Now I’m stressed… about not relaxing correctly.
Which defeats the entire point.
So What Actually Helps?
Not a full reset.
Not a perfectly aesthetic routine.
Just small things that take the edge off.
Here’s what I’ve found actually works:
→ Reduce the noise (just a little)
Not everything needs your attention right now.
Silence a few notifications.
Ignore the non-urgent stuff.
The world will survive.
→ Do one tiny reset
Not the whole house. Not everything on your list.
Just one thing:
- Clear one surface
- Answer one message
- Put away five things
It’s enough to create a little breathing room.
→ Give your brain something simple to focus on
This is my favorite.
When my thoughts feel loud, I need something quiet and repetitive.
Something that doesn’t demand anything from me—but gently pulls me out of the chaos, like coloring on my tablet.
Even a few minutes makes a difference.
Final Thought
I think a lot of us are walking around saying,
“I’m fine, it’s not that stressful.”
When in reality… it’s a bunch of small things stacking up quietly.
Not overwhelming enough to force a break.
But just enough to keep you slightly on edge all day.
And you don’t need to fix everything at once.
You just need moments where your mind can settle—even briefly.
That’s enough.
